Focus on the Tarantula Nebula

Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series

Here's the next of my colour remixes of some of the best shots from Hubble/NASA/ESA.

In the original images, the teams at the various space centres assign colour to structures identified in x-ray, visible light, ultraviolet and infrared - as well as the signatures of various elements like hydrogen, helium and others. What I've done is to re-assign the colours, sometimes making them richer, sometimes adjusting the hue and sometimes 'dodging and burning' various parts to emphasise the visual beauty.

This one shows the Tarantula Nebula - click the image and see just how many stars flood this area.

Tarantula Nebula of the Large Magellanic Cloud

This Hubble image shows old stars from the distant past and rich, interstellar gas clouds feeding the formation of new ones. The most massive and hottest stars are intense, high-energy radiation sources and this pushes away what remains of the gas and dust, compressing and sculpting it. As the whorls and eddies clump and stretch it, gravity takes over and the birth of the next generation of new stars is triggered.

Street art at our feet

Manhole covers - one does not often think about them. One might look down while walking in the city and feeling a blast of warm air come up from the ground. There, at your feet is a large iron "lid" covering access to the dark inner workings of the city.

You might also become aware of these everyday items, if a storm causes one to burst out of the street from water pressure, or an electrical explosion forces one into the air - these sometimes make the evening news.

I thought that I would share some of the magnificent street art avialable on round magnets through Zazzle. Created by multiple shopkeepers and made by Zazzle, you won't find a finer reputation for quality goods, customer service and speedy delivery.

Thistles - weed or not?

Spring is coming and it is time to think about getting into the garden. "Weeds" are taking over the beds. Some of these "weeds" are quite beautiful. So much so, that they are honored as emblems of family and/or country.

Such is the case with the thistle. This is a beautiful plant (although quite thorny) with a fuzzy purple flower. When the summer comes, the plant dries out and there is fantastic beige fluffy thistle down that might be blown by the wind.

Here are some selections from the shopkeepers at Zazzle.
